How is the urban environment represented?
Within Chungking Express the urban environment is represented in a number of ways, such as the over crowdedness of Hong Kong's streets, the multi-national people and cultures that appear, along with general 'hustle and bustle' background noise of Hong Kong. From this opening scene we see how Hong Kong has completely destroyed the entirety of anything that is natural, in this sequences there is no sign of anything green or anything to express that any form of nature exists. Hong Kong is represented as a post modernist, purely concrete environment, with no form of natural life. The urban environment has also been represented as a consumerist environment, through the showing of the international brands such as Coca Cola or McDonalds, and the use of high visibility and neon lighting shows a post modernistic view on what many cities around the world will look like in years to come.
How does this relate to the stereotypes which exist about Hong Kong?
Many of these representations, follow on the stereotypes about Hong Kong. Including the stereotypes based around Hong Kong such as Hong Kong being an international travel hub as at the time the film was Hong Kong airport was directly in the centre of the city. These representations also support the stereotype of Hong Kong being a multi cultural society, as in the opening scenes you see a range of nationalities and cultures. The stereotypical showing of the fast pace of Hong Kong is represented with the unusual camera work used.
