The Deer Hunter - Russian Roulette Scene

In what ways does the clip shock?

The clip shocks by using the element of shock and tension to build up the shock aspect, also through the use of seen brutality against other human beings. The use of the game Russian Roulette also gives the audience an aspect long drawn shock as they never know who is going to get shot.

Does the scene provide any feeling of uplift?

The scene does provide a sense of uplift to the audience when the soldiers begin to fight back, also providing the audience with a sense of hope for the rest of the film.

How does the clip make you feel?

The clip does make me feel shocked, through the use of violence and the brutality against other humans. Also, through this use of violence it gives the audience an extreme sense of shock and suspense through the use of the game Russian Roulette.

  1. WWW- Some good detail Rowan and a nice acknowledgement that even a harrowing scene like this one can provide the audience with a sense of uplift.

  2. One way in which this film provides shock through the use of sound, or lack of. The use of o sound in this film helps to add authenticity to the scene, this is because the sounds that are used within this scene is the clicks of the empty gun chamber, the cries from the character of Stevie out of pure fear, the sound of the rain surrounding the swamp and the laughter of the guards who are watching the captives play Russian roulette. Within this clip the use of very basic sounds help to add a sense of fear to the audience as they do not expect the interruption of the silence along with the gentle patter of rain to be the click of empty chambers followed by the screams of a fear stricken captive. Through use of very little sound during this clip it gives the audience a sense of suspense to who is going to be dragged up next, and whether or not the chamber of the gun the captives are given is going to have a bullet in or not, meaning during the scene before hand the audience are able to build a off screen relationship with the characters, making them feel a connection with the characters giving them a sense of fear for their character.
